I really like how Firefox remembers any tabs you have open with web pages you are browsing so that the next time you open up Firefox the tabs automatically reload. To try and imitate this I’ve written a small AppleScript script which if used to open Safari will do so and load some pre-defined web pages each in a new tab. I use the script with Safari version 4 but I’m sure it will also work with previous versions. Let me know if this is not the case. Here’s the script:

-- Applescript to open Safari and preload tabs with specific URLS

-- Enter the URL for Tab 1-3
set Tab1_url to "http://www.newsgator.com"
set Tab2_url to "http://www.twitter.com"
set Tab3_url to "http://www.challengelogic.net"

-- Tell Safari to ope the new Tabs as specified

tell application "Safari"
activate
set the URL of document 1 to Tab1_url
my open_tab()
set the URL of document 1 to Tab2_url
my open_tab()
set the URL of document 1 to Tab3_url
my open_tab()
end tell

-- Subroutine to open a new tab

on open_tab()
tell application "Safari" to activate
tell application "System Events"
tell process "Safari"
click menu item "New Tab" of menu "File" of menu bar 1
end tell
end tell
end open_tab

As you can see this script opens 3 web pages in new tabs, hopefully you can see how easy it would be to add additional code to open up even more sites as required. There is a slight problem with the script and that is you must set Safari so that new windows open with something other than the top sites page. I’m currently fairy new to Applescript but will try and fix this in a future version when I have more time. There may also be a better way of doing this. Until they feel free to try out my script at your peril :).

View Comments|Add Comment

Airfoil: A rocking app..

 I’ve been using my Airport Express to listen to music through iTunes on my HiFi system but have been thinking to myself how great it would be if I could use the Airport Express to listen to any audio output from all my applications and not just iTunes.

I stumpled on to this great application about a week ago by chance. The idea is that you paste any long and not so user friendly URL into their online tool and they provide you with a smaller one. This is great for services such as twitter which only allows 140 characters per post and a URL you may want to share via twitter could actually be more that 140 characters. So I guess you could say this is a great tool.

The only issue I have with these services is that potentially spammers and hackers could abuse these tools. My concern is that when you see one of these shortened URLs you have no way of deciding whether or not the link will take you to a safe website or not. For all you know the link could direct you to a web site that runs some dangerous script when you navigate to it.

It’s not all bad news, I was visiting the tinyurl.com site today and noticed they offer a ‘preview’ version of their URLS. Basically by appending preview to the beginning of the URL, instead of going direct to the destination you are take to the tinyurl.com site and notified the actual full URL so that you can decided to proceed to the site or not. The screen shot below shows the output from appending preview to the tinyurl example shown earlier, http://preview.tinyurl.com/pv9tge.

As you can see from above http://tinyurl.com/pv9tge is actually safe and simply takes you to one of my previous blog postings. But at least by using this feature for any tinyurl.com urls you get you have the opportunity to decide for yourself.

View Comments|Add Comment

I wish I could do this!

I love getting out on my Mountain bike, and when possible you’ll find me exploring Sherwood Pines. You see I have 8 months remaining on my current O2 iPhone contract. The deal from O2 is that if I want to upgrade to the new model I would need to end my existing contract at 8x£35 (£280) I will then need to purchase the new phone at £185/£88 and sign up for a new contract (18 or 24 months) at £35 per month. Not much of an incentive for existing and loyal customers.

But what is really annoying to me is that by not providing any reasonable upgrade path, in my case O2 are potentially loosing money. Let me explain. If I was to upgrade to the new iPhone I would most likely be expected to pay a fee for the new phone, let's say the £185/£88 and also take out a new 18/24 month contract. However I would then immediatley donate my current iPhone 3G to my dear wife and take out an additional 18/24 month contract so that she can use the old phone. However based on the current upgrade options (or should I say lack of?) I am not likely to upgrade, and may also consider jailbreaking my current phone in 8 months time and saying goodbye to O2 . Instead O2 could have had £185/£88 from me, another 18/24 months of £35 and a second (totally new customer) 18/24 month contract of £30/35 per month without even having to issue a new phone to my wife, the new customer. I may even have handed back my T-Mobile mobile broadband and moved to O2 for and extra £15 per month to use the 'thether' function on the new iPhone.If you have any thoughts/feeings regarding upgrading please let me know.

View Comments|Add Comment

iPhone Aware

I can’t believe I forgot to mention in my last post that my new site theme is actually aware of what device is being used to view the site and if it happens to be an iPhone then the users gets delivered an iPhone specific version of the site. I’ve been busy with work, and that’s all I have to say on the matter.

Hope you like the new site theme? There are still some tweaks to finish it off but I’m feeling motivated again so hopefully they will be finished off and also for the same reason you should find me posting more often. In addition to this, my personal site, I’ve also been working offline on a new project, which hopefully you should get to see around August/September this year. I’m not going to give much away right now, but it will be Apple Mac related. As I get closer to the launch date I will start to post more details and project updates here.

Back to this site, I’ve created a DISQUS account which I have decided to use as my comments service for the site. You will only be able to add comments to this and future posts. So far I’ve not added the functionality to older posts, thats not to say I won’t in the future, but for the moment I’m undecided. On the way back to the car we decided to take a break to take in the views from the cliffs above the beach. Whilst sitting and enjoying the sea crashing on the beach I noticed an old gentleman sat doing the same as us. He looked a little sad though as he sat there dosing off every now and then. Just then a Seagul flew down and rested on the railings just in front of him. After a few seconds the man shuffled quickly inside his trouser pockets and after a bit of a struggle he eventually revealed one of those cheap disposable cameras. He then tried to frame a picture of the gul, but by the time he had taken control of the camera the bird flew away. Over the next 30 minutes or so I continued to watch the man as he fumbled to take two more pictures of resting Guls on the Railings.

I wondered if this was now the old man's daily routine, spending the hours wandering and resting around the streets of St Ives trying to take pictures of the local wildlife, whilst sneaking in a quick nap here and there. This got me thinking; if only he had a digital camera and even a photo printer how easier this task might be for him. He wouldn't have to worry about wasting film and could take hundreds of shots on the hope that just one would capture the subject as intended. Having the small photo printer may also work out cheaper allowing him just to print out the best shots without the worry of having to pay for developing the whole film roll.

The problem with this scenario though is that even if the old man had a digital camera and printer he probably would not be able to use it. It makes me wonder just how much easier the lives of our grandparents would be if we could spare a few hours to show them how to use technology and help build their confidence in using it?

The above photo was snapped using my iPhone.

View Comments|Add Comment

Emergency Room

I wonder if the creators of Emergency Room, or as it is better known ER, ever believed back in 1994 when it first aired that they would still be going strong 14 series and over 300 episodes later. I can still remember how amazed I was when I first watched ER at 9pm every Thursday night, every episode provided this feeling of a movie production and not a TV episode. It was certainly great for 1994, and now 14 years later it still holds it own. I only actually ever watched the first 4 or 5 series and recently thought it would be great to catch up on the series missed. However we decided not just to watch the missed series but actually start from the beginning again and work our way through all 14 series. So far we have managed to watch the ER Series 1 DVD Box Set and enjoyed it just as much as I did in 1994. The bizarre thing is that it could have been made last year, it hasn't dated and the production is just as good if not better than tv shows being produced today. If you are looking for something great to watch, get yourself a copy of the original ER series. Next up for us is series 2 :).

Cool website: scitoys.com

I came across this cool web site today whilst wasting time browsing the Internet. It's been a few years since Scott Kelby wrote and published this book and some of it is a little dated now. That said the book is still a great read for any Mac fans out there. The book explains the truth around being a Mac user in a PC centric world. Being a mac user now myself after switching a number of years ago I can really appreciate the amusing stories told in this book. I've even experienced some of the situations first hand. It's really interesting to read now and see just how things have changed with Apple and the Macintosh since the book was published.

In my view this is a great and very entertaining book especially if like me you have realised what its all about being a Mac user. The weather hasn't been fantastic during this stay but we have definately recharged our batteries and caught up on our reading and podcasts :).

Book: iWoz

I've had Steve Wozniak's autobiography on the bookshelf since it was released late in 2006 but have just got around to reading it. Once started though I couldn't put it down and finished it in just a few days. If you know me you will know this is fast going for a book as I'm generally a slow reader. I like to read every word and take them all in.

The book is great and takes you back to Steve's childhood and how he got interested in electronics and then later computers. The book goes into Woz's obsession with creating circuits with as few components as possible, which proved to be one of the many reasons why the first personal computer, designed and built by Steve was so successful. The book goes on describing how Apple Computers was born and became an overnight success. Importantly and interestingly, Steve rights a number of truths which prior the publishing of this book were documented in every book, movie, web site relating to the history of Apple.

Finally Woz explains what took place after he left Apple, starting his own company developing universal remote controls, organising festivals and how he started teaching. In my opinion this book is a must read for anyone interested in the history of the home computer and/or Apple computers. During my visit as well as meeting some great work colleagues I was able to spend some time in the city visiting the likes of Red Square and the Kremlin. My hotel, The Renaissance was situated next to the Moscow Olympic Stadium erected for the 1980 games.

The city was not what I had expected, it was much more and is definitely a place I hope to spend more time getting to know in the future. The locals I met where friendly and very interesting and I was lucky not to have experienced many language problems. It's weird but having visited Russia the world almost feels smaller now. If you ever get such an opportunity to visit Moscow I would tell you to jump at it, everything about it is interesting from its history, the people, the architecture, it's culture and the treasures such as the Fabergé Eggs found in the Kremlin.

The weather was cold, it averaged around -10 degrees Celsius, but dropped as low as -27 according to the local news, we also experienced 20 cm of snow fall on some days. As well as the 50 plus photographs which I've posted tonight I also took some video footage using my Sony digital still camera. depending on how this turns out when edited I hope to post this in the next week or so. This won't happen over night, but expect to visit sometime in the future, only to find a totally new and hopefully better site. Not only will the site be re-branded but also expect to see enhancements, new sections and much more content.

One year on ...

So it's been over a year now since I first started this blog, and I hate to admit it but over 5 months since my last post. I guess you can say I've only been blogging for half a year! Anyways there is good reason why I've not been posting. Lots of stuff has happened since May and I simply haven't had the time to update the site. I did warn you when I started that it may not be a regular thing, but I guess you expected a little more than every 5 months. I know it's all been said before but I'm confident over the next few months you should start to see more posts and hopefully come christmas it may even become a regular occurrence.

As I said lots of stuff has been going on since my last post and here's a quick update.

1 - Spent time developing a number of large web sites.
2 - Attended multiple training courses in London and Leeds.
3 - Visited Cornwall.
4 - Visited Monaco.
5 - Spent hours writing a Linux Training course.

Finally I've made some changes too which have taken a lot of my time sorting. The first was the decision to close my part time web business, and the second was to accept a new, more demanding and hopefully more rewarding job role hoping it will change my quality of life and enable me to spend more time with Rachel. I also now plan to spend more time doing the activities and work I enjoy rather than, as I have for the last few years, spending all my time outside of work doing more work (web design). The intention is that these changes will enable me to get more video and photography taken, edited and published. I'm also hoping to fit in more personal web design and other personal programming projects.

Benalmadena, Marbella and Puerto Banus

Sorry all, I'm still waiting for the universal version of FCE so still no movies to post but here's some more photographs. As well as from Andy himself these great 'stories' come from characters such as Steve jobs, Steve Wozniak, Burrell Smith, Bud Tribble, Jef Raskin and many more of the amazing people who worked at Apple in the early years. Brought together in this book all these amazing snippets are used to plot the history and tell the story, from the people who were there when it happened, of how the Mac was made. If I feel up to it later I'm going to try and publish at least the photos taken in St Ives and try to make a start editing the footage ready to be post.

Camel Convoy

Finally I've posted some content to the video archive. It's nothing spectacular and definately won't win any oscars. Camel Convoy is a short film edited from footage taken on a trip to Tunisia in October 2000. I've not taken much care or time editing it so it's a little raw, the main purpose was to get something edited so that I could practice getting the compression mastered for web publishing. I think I've got the compression about right and hope the movie should play just as well on Windows machines as it does on my Mac. Let me know if you have any issues with playback. The quicktime movie is 5.3mb and runs for just 1 minute 52 seconds. No such luck, I had my first physiotherapy assessment yesterday and I've had bad pain again ever since. Basically now the shoulder strap as gone I've got start getting movement back in my shoulder and arm and it hurts. The initial path of exercises is to try and get full movement back without any load but it's still painful and very scary just how much movement I've lost in such a short period of time. As before I have a number of new exercises designed to do the above which I need to do every 2 hours. On a positive note I really feel now that the road to recovery is on its way.

What joy Christmas will be!! Was in hospital for 5 days and the operation seems to have been a success. I still have a lot of pain from both the wound and shoulder and arm but it's much less than before. If on a scale of 1 to 10 my original pain was 10, my current pain is around 6. The wound is about 3.5 inches long on the top of my right shoulder. Here's a picture:

I still can't use my right arm/hand and although I have some exercises to do every couple of hours, given by the Physiotherapist, I have to keep the shoulder strapped up until I have the staples removed and the hospital starts me on physiotherapy. The strap is also a must so that the tendons and nerve can heal before they get used again. The Staples are being removed 16th December and my first physiotherapy assessment is 20th December.

More Waiting

Last week was I guess another week from hell. This extra bone is causing problems with my tendons and nerves for my right arm/hand. He's hoping to do the operation this Thursday or next Tuesday which should help with the pain. It all started Monday morning when I lost feeling in my right hand and started with very bad pains in my right shoulder. Having spent almost 12 hours at Queens Medical Centre they diagnosed me with an infected shoulder joint and found that I had grown some additional bone on my shoulder. By Tuesday evening the pain was getting worse, It was bad, I've never experienced pain like it. The pain was that bad that I went to Hospital again (this time Kings Mill in Mansfield) and was admitted straight away. I was given some medication and let out later on Wednesday but was admitted again Friday.

This time I was seen by a specialist who gave me some steroid injections and asked that I see him in Newark Hospital next week. I'm now back at home again and am still in immense pain and am unable to use my right arm/hand.
